When I was growing up, my grandmother owned a restaurant in South Tulsa called La Cuisine, which had a little market attached. My mom managed the place during the day, so she would pick me up from school and take me back to work with her. When we arrived, I would always go straight back into the kitchen and see if the baker was in. If she was, I knew I could be her assistant making all the goodies that were sold from the counter. Lemon squares, cookies, cakes, you name it- it was a beautiful thing to a kid. I just loved chocolate (still do!) so the chocolate cookies were my favorite. Here’s a recipe for one of our family traditions, La Cuisine Chocolate Cookies.

In a double broiler set to medium high:

  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 14ounce can sweetened condensed milk

Melt, and remove from heat. Pour the mixture into a mixing bowl, and then add:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 cups chopped pecan
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla

Mix until combined, then drop onto a baking sheet. Bake at 350ยบ until done, which is ten to twelve minutes.
